Kasabian album cover analysis

We have chosen to do the band Kasabian's single Fire as our music video. So for inpiration for what we would like out CD cover to look like we have been looking at all of Kasabians artwork for all there promo singles and album releases, all of their covers seem to be quite simple and focus on an element of mystery including colour epecially all of their earlier releasesm, the ones at the bottom of the picture, but some such as 'Empire' the album cover does have connatiations that link to the title as the album is called empire and the image used is that of a roman soliders which relates to the roman empire.

We have decided to use simple symbolic imagery on the front cover that relates to some scenes in our film, such as shooting a native american riding a horse, which links into our western theme and also the plot of our video.

A2 media studies research, How Kasabian market themselves and they’re target audience

Kasabian are an Alternative rock band and were formed in 1999 in Leicester, There are currently four members in the band Tom Meighan – Lead vocal, Serge Pizzorno – guitarist and backing vocals, Chris Edwards – bassist and Ian Matthews – Drummer. The band to date have released three albums, there first released in 2004 self titled as ‘Kasabian’, There second album ‘Empire’ was released in 2006 and they’re third album ‘West ryder pauper lunatic asylum’ was released in 2009.

All three albums that the band have released have been fairly successful and the band have begun to be recognized as one of the best British bands of the modern era, proved when they won the best British group at the Brit awards 2010. Kasabian are marketed as a men’s sort of band, this is recognized when they starred in the Carlsberg advert for the world cup and they were chosen to premier the new 2010 England shirt for the world cup, Beer and football both heavily linked to the culture of men. However they do have a very wide target audience ranging from teenagers up to the older men, I also fell that they are also marketable to women with their edgy image which women may find attractive.

Music Videos Overview

A music video is a video accompanied by music,the intention of music videos are to promote and advertise a bands music. A music video helps people understand the meaning of the song, it gives them the chance to relate to the song.

The first music video was made in the 1980's, the first music video was a bunch of still images put together with music, this method is still used today. MTV took control of music videos, they showed how important they are to the music industry. The first video that MTV showed was 'Video killed the radio star' by the Buggles, when this was shown people saw it as a new era for the music indstry as people could show what the band was other then music. Some people saw the start of music videos as a bad thing, they believed that people would be appreciated for there looks instead of their talent.

Music videos for bands are very importnat, it gives them the chance to show off, bands can use them to show people what there really about, for example a band like JLS use there music videos to show off there dancing skills were as you have a band like the wombats who use it just to show them playing there music. there are many different types of music videos, you can have ones that tell a story e.g. a love story, a robbery or a murder, another type is live performance, this is where the music video is just of the band playing there instraments, other types of videos can be of dance routens or just randomness. A good music video that shows vocal abilities and gives the band a chance to show off is Ok go with 'Here it goes' The video shows great creativity.

Genre choice

For my music video, the group have decided to do fire by kasabian, the genre of the band is alternative rock, alternative rock is different from rock because it includes a subgenre of indipendent music. When we look at the group kasabian we know that they are alternative rock beacuse of the style, the style consists of a punk rock look.
Alternative rock emerged from the genre of punk rock, this is why the style has more of a punk rock look. In the past the genre wasnt mainstream, bands would normally play in small clubs and would only be heard through word of mouth, nowadays alternative rock has become mainstream and are used to playing large gigs and are in magazines and on tv.

Choice of brief

I have chosen to make a music video, this is because i find that a music video would be more intresting to make as alot more has to go into it, also i have more of an intrest in music then i would in movies. For first year i already made a movie so thought id change by doing a music video. THe reasearch i did before the summer with my last group when making the florence and the machine video was much more intresting, also with music a script doesnt have to be made so its alot easier.

Reflection on practice

How do you think you have improved your practical skills during your fist year of studying media?
During media i think i have gained more skill in filiming when it came to using the camera, also i have learnt skills in editing but only basic ones.

What are the lessons you have learnt from your AS crime production?
I have learnt from AS that i need to attend more lessons because i can tell that i have lost marks due to that fact of the stuff i never learnt because i was never there. I learnt that i am not a very confident person so when it came to filiming was much happier being behind the camera.

Are there any skills/sections you feel you need more support with in the practical part of the course?
I think i need more support when it come to editing as i only learnt the basics of cutting, also i only learnt the basics of photoshop.
